The Original Black Lotus Artwork is Coming to Auckland Card Show 2026

One of trading card history's most iconic artworks is making its New Zealand debut.

When Auckland Card Show first opened its doors in 2024, our goal was simple: create a card show that would bring together New Zealand's card hobbyists and bring them the ultimate card experience!

Not just somewhere to buy and sell Pokémon cards, sports cards or trading cards, but an event that celebrated every part of the hobby. A place where collectors, players, artists, publishers and families could come together to experience something special.

Every year we've asked ourselves one question:

"How do we make next year's show even better?"

For Auckland Card Show 2026, we believe we've answered that question in spectacular fashion.

This August, attendees will have the opportunity to stand in front of one of the most iconic pieces of trading card history ever created: the original Black Lotus artwork by the late Christopher Rush.

A Moment Years in the Making

Interestingly, this isn't the first time Black Lotus has appeared on our website.

Back in 2025, we published a blog featuring the trading cards we'd love to see at Auckland Card Show one day. Like many collectors, we dreamed about seeing legendary pieces of hobby history in New Zealand.

The Black Lotus appeared on that list of cards we would love to see at the show.

Fast forward to 2026, and thanks to the generosity of Erik Olofsson, creator of Sorcery: Contested Realm, a Diamond sponsor of Auckland Card Show 2026, and owner of the original Black Lotus artwork, that dream has become a reality.

The original painting will be on public display throughout Auckland Card Show 2026.

For collectors across New Zealand, opportunities like this simply don't come around very often.

Why is Black Lotus so Important?

Even if you've never played Magic: The Gathering, chances are you've heard the name.

Painted by legendary fantasy artist Christopher Rush in 1993 for the original Alpha release of Magic: The Gathering, Black Lotus quickly became the game's most famous and desirable card.

More than thirty years later, it remains one of the most recognisable trading cards ever created.

Its influence extends well beyond Magic itself.

For many people, Black Lotus represents the beginning of the modern trading card game industry. It has inspired generations of players, artists and collectors while becoming one of the hobby's most celebrated pieces of artwork.
